SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is part of an overall digital marketing strategy. Its objective is to enhance the visibility/appearance of a website on search engine websites such as Google. Since almost all web traffic comes through either organic (i.e. “free”) or paid for keyword searches, the ultimate goal of SEO is to produce greater amounts of organic website traffic by improving the position at which a website ranks within the top results returned by search engines to online “searchers” based on their search queries.

To be effective, SEO relies on numerous approaches and processes that involve optimizing various parts of the website so that search engines can better understand how to “rank” each piece of content on the website. The process begins with keyword research, where marketers try to find out what keywords and variations of keywords users are searching for when looking for something online. Then the selected keywords are placed in content, titles, meta descriptions, and URL’s.

As a robust digital marketing strategy, social media marketing (SMM) uses social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube to grow a business’s brand, products or services. The primary purpose of SMM is to establish a connection with the target audience; build brand recognition; create traffic to the website; and generate sales.

SMM engages the target audience through the use of visual mediums, i.e., social media posts, photos, videos, reels and social media stories. SMM allows businesses to directly communicate with their consumers; learn about their consumers’ needs; and create long-lasting relationships with them.

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) is a type of digital marketing that uses paid advertising in order to get your website noticed in the search engine results pages (SERPs). What sets SEM apart from SEO (search engine optimisation) is that SEO aims to get people to visit your website through organic (not paid) search engine traffic, and SEM aims to attract traffic right away by placing ads within search engines such as Google or Bing.

SEM acquires its traffic through platforms such as Google Ads, where businesses can “bid” on keyword phrases that users query or search for in Google or Bing. When someone does a query, Google or Bing will display an advertisement at the top or bottom of the results page. The business will be charged for each click on their ad (this is called Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising).
